Three dances, one partnership
Son is the oldest of them: close, upright, danced slightly behind the beat.

Casino is the social one, the circles and the calls, the thing most people mean when they say Cuban salsa.

Rumba is not partner dancing at all. Guaguancó is a conversation between two people who never touch, played out in front of the drums.

Very few people teach all three. Fewer still have won at them.
